MicroNutrient Nutrition: An International Consultation on Dietary Modelling Scenarios for Micronutrient Adequacy
22/10/2026
About

Dietary modelling is widely used to estimate the effect of changes in food consumption on micronutrient intakes, and increasingly to identify which food-based strategies might close the adequacy gaps reported across European populations. Its usefulness for policy, however, depends on non-empirical assumptions: which population groups to prioritise, which constraints to impose on modelled diets, and which interventions are plausible enough to be worth modelling at all.

Those assumptions are typically made within a project team, and their acceptability and feasibility in different national and cultural contexts is rarely examined systematically before results are produced.

Zero Hidden Hunger EU is exploring how changes in food consumption could improve micronutrient intakes whilst remaining acceptable, affordable, and environmentally sustainable. The research considers both the wider population and groups at greater risk of deficiency, including people with increased nutritional needs and those facing barriers to accessing nutritious food. Possible approaches include choosing more nutrient-dense foods, making greater use of under-used food sources, and enhancing commonly eaten foods through fortification.

In this session, researchers from the project will present illustrative dietary scenarios and invite participants to assess their potential to improve micronutrient intakes, their likely acceptability to the people concerned, and their feasibility in different settings. Participants can indicate when they have insufficient information to judge. The feedback will help researchers refine the scenarios before further modelling.

The session is convened through the MicroNutrient Nutrition Helix, the project’s collaborative community hosted on Crowdhelix.

Join us to:

  • Hear how Zero Hidden Hunger EU are developing dietary scenarios to improve micronutrient intakes in different population groups.
  • Assess illustrative scenarios for their potential to improve intakes, acceptability to the people concerned, and feasibility in different settings.
  • Suggest population groups, practical constraints, and dietary approaches that Zero Hidden Hunger EU should consider.
  • Discuss where views differ and how the scenarios could be refined before modelling

Who should attend:

Researchers in nutrition, dietetics, food science and public health; national nutrition institutes and public health authorities; and others working on micronutrient adequacy in European or international settings.
